Umbrella Liability Coverage

It is a requirement that every business owner carry general liability insurance to protect against the obvious run-ins they might have with customers, suppliers, and other unknown elements. But what about additional insurance coverage? Is it necessary, and what does it cover exactly?

How much coverage does an umbrella policy offer? The most common umbrella coverage amount is $1,000,000 but it is possible to get anywhere from $2,000,000 to $10,000,000 depending on your company's needs. Larger corporations need a larger amount of coverage.

This "additional" liability insurance policy (supplemental insurance) that I refer to is called umbrella liability insurance. It picks up the slack of your general liability policy and goes above and beyond the general liability coverage. To put it another way, you need umbrella liability insurance policies if you think the compensation from claims could exceed the amount your business liability policy allows. This type of business liability insurance comes in handy in extreme situations that would stop the company from continuing operations during a lawsuit or during difficult times when clients may put pressure on you to provide more than you are required to provide.

Umbrella liability coverage is often only purchased by large corporations as they are typically the only ones who find it to be cost effective. Umbrella coverage is completely optional and usually doesn't need to be purchased by small businesses. However, there are many small businesses who do buy umbrella liability insurance and it helps them immensely. This is a decision that will have to be made by oneself to determine if it will be a worthwhile investment. In a lot of cases, the answer may surprise you.

Keep in mind that individuals sometimes purchase an umbrella policy for various reasons that are different than that or a corporation. As it was mentioned in a previous paragraph, if it is believed that the financial reward for a claim will exceed that which is allowed by general liability insurance, umbrella insurance coverage can pay the policy holder the remainder of what they were entitled to receive. For individuals, this type of umbrella can supplement auto insurance, homeowners insurance, life insurance, and much more.
